Mysore is the city of palaces, but the most popular of them is the Mysore Palace. It is also known as Amba Vilas. It was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, the Wodeyars. The original palace got burnt down in 1897 and was rebuilt. It was designed in Indo Gothic style by the well known British architect, Henry Irwin.
The Mysore Palace is a three storied stone structure, with marble domes and a 145 feet five storied tower. It is a treasure house of exquisite carvings and works of art from all over the world. The palace is surrounded by a large garden.
The majestic Durbar Hall in the palace has an ornate ceiling and many sculpted pillars. The magnificent jewel studded golden throne of the Wodeyars is displayed here during the Dusshera festival. Illuminated on Sundays,
public holidays and during Dusshera, the palace presents a spectacle of breathtaking beauty.
